Resistance builds strength...

Strength doesn't come from what you can't do. Strength is coming from the things you once thought you couldn't do and if you do them whilst overcoming fears, you'll find courage as well.
All new things that you will undertake will give you more strength, especially the things you are afraid of. Those things build tenacity and resilience. Building strength both mentally and physically requires always a level of resistance.

Due to a car accident I had to spent almost  a month in a hospital. All this time I stayed in bed and hardly used my legs. When after four weeks the doctor said that it was OK to leave my  bed, they had to stop me from jumping out of it right at that moment.  I couldn't wait to be active again. In the end it took me a few days before I could walk normally again and weeks before I had my full strength back. I learned  first handed that muscles will get weak very quickly when you don't use them. I used rubber bands and weights to gain my strength back.  I used rubber bands and weights to gain my strength back , in other words I used resistance.strenght

My dad picked me up from the hospital and he said: son, you drive. I felt fear and anxiety but also an immediate mental resistance. My dad made me drive knowing that I had to push through this fear for driving caused by he accident.

My body and mind  pushed back on me not to stop me but to build strength.
You have the same feeling with 'new things' you initial feel an internal resistance. Sometimes it is because you are breaking from an old habit. At others times it is just fear, caused by an event in the past or just because you have to leave your comfort zone.  Remember growth and change is just outside your comfort zone. Hence resistance is necessary to grow and to change. Growth and change makes us more experience and more experience makes us stronger.

Awake your inner Hulk

There is tremendous power and strength inside all of us. A dormant giant is waiting to be awakened. We all come from the same universal source, we just need to tap into it and not let it go to waste. We are not machines, machines degrade every time they get used, no matter the quality it was build with.

Unlike machines, human beings get better every time they do something. Our mind and body get worst when we do nothing, but when both mind and body get engaged in a positive way, we can achieve almost anything. The important thing is we need to come into action, massive action, not tomorrow but now.... yes at this moment.
George Balanchine said: “Why are you stingy with yourself? Why are you holding back? What are you saving for-for another time? There are no other times. There is only now. Right now”
If you have an idea immediately follow it up by doing something in the direction of that idea, no matter how small. You can write it down, make drawing, put it in your calendar no matter what it is do something. There is incredible power in that. When you bring something from the 'non-existent-world', your mind, into the physical-world, transformation happens and energy starts to flow. When energy flows that's when your inner 'Hulk' wakes up.
inner hulk
Your 'dormant giant' might look inactive when you don't tap into him. If that was the case than it's may be only a waste of the to you available energy and power. Unfortunate if you don't use your inner 'Hulk' it will start using you. That sounds like nonsense but it isn't. Think about procrastination, addictions, depression, petty crimes, wrong eating habits,  all outings of boredom.
An old expression says: idleness is the mother of vice. Scripture teaches idleness or the lack of action, feeds the seven sins:Wrath, extreme anger; Greed , intensive selfish desire for material things; Sloth, reluctance to work; Vanity, excessive pride, Lust, excessive desire; Envy, jalousie; Gluttony, excess in eating. Now before you dismiss all this, I  invite you to look at it again. Is this really so different as I described earlier?
I dare to say that you are lucky if your inner giant stays asleep when you don't come into positive action. We see unfortunately enough examples, even in our near surrounding, where boredom or the lack of action turns into something very negative and far greater than just being passive or doing nothing.
So don't waste that power and wake up that giant inside of you, put it to work, bring your ideas in reality and follow your dreams. In other words; use that inner strength, get up and come into massive action.

The 9-day British Open to the World Blackpool Dance Festival is the world's first and most famous annual international ballroom dance competition. The number of participants from more than 60 different countries, is expected to be well over 3,000.

The British Open to the World Dance Festival covering a period of nine days is the largest ballroom competition in the world. The Festival covers Ballroom and Latin American dancing, incorporating the British Open Championships for Adult Amateur and Professional couples.
The 9-day Blackpool Dance Festival is the world's first and most famous annual ballroom dance competition of international significance, held at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, England since 1920. It is also the largest competition: in 2013 the event was 88th years and there were 60 countries represented. A total number of 2,953 entries in the 12 events.
It is to be expected that the number of entries this year will grow to well over 3,000. This means that more than 1,500 couples are already preparing for their most important competition of the season.
Ballroom dancing as a competive sport has grown in propularity among the mainstream audience. Not in the least due to the top ranking prime time television shows Dancing With The Stars in the U.S. and Strictly Come Dancing in England.
Dance competitors of all levels will compete at the British Open but it is to be expected that only national champions have a shot at the title. Professional Latin U.S. Champions and reigning Professional World Latin Champions Yulia Zagoruychenko and Riccardo Cocchi came in second last year, but are top favorite to go home with the title of British Open Champions Professional Latin this year.
Dutch Professionals Latin Champions To prepare for a prestigious competition as the Blackpool festival is a matter of careful planning and dedication in practice and lessons, but it also requires teamwork. This testify current Professional Dutch Latin ChampionsDebbie Krewinkel and Remi Janssen. They are finalist and semi finalist in multiple international competitions and state that their achievements would not have been possible without careful planning and teamwork. Krewinkel and Janssen are working for years with an international team of coaches Barbara McColl from England, Erik Kock from the Netherlands and Jean Dorff from the U.S.A. each are top coaches in their own field for expertise.
Remi Janssen says that the challenge and attraction of competitive dancing lies in the fact that it's not just about finishing your rounds, it is more so about dancing them as if it doesn't take any effort. Jean Dorff claims: where in many sports movement is just a mean to a goal, like scoring a point in basketball, this is not the case with competitive ballroom dancing. In dancing the movement itself is the goal and the dancers are judged on the quality of the movement whereas in other sports scoring a point is first priority.
With millions of dance enthusiast around the world in the social, amateur and professional arena, one can only wonder why dance competitions like Blackpool are not yet broadcasted on mainstream television. I'm sure that many people would like to see how champions like Ricardo and Yulia and Remi and Debbie defend their national colors on live television.
The Blackpool British open to the world ballroom dance competition will be held from May 22nd through May 30th 2014 as the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, England.

Make the jump

To go from where we are to where we want to be, often requires a trust in something bigger and greater than ourselves. With that thrust we have to take make a jump or better yet a leap of faith.
The author / poet Edward Cummings, better know as E. E. Cummings said: "Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit."
leap of faith make the jump
I can only wonder what will happen if we even believe in something greater than ourselves...

4 DON'Ts if you want to be a winner...

Dear...

Four DON'Ts to become a winner:

Becoming a winner is as much knowing what you need to do as understanding what you should not do.

1. Don't rely on talent alone. If you have the talent for something than that is a blessing, but talent alone is not enough and relying on just your talent will certainly not be enough to become a winner. You have to take massive action, do you dues, practice, study and prepare.

2. Don't just follow in other winners footsteps. Walk the extra mile and think out of the box. Winners in any sport or discipline are game changers. Study the best, but also look beyond your discipline, see what you can learn from other disciplines or sports. Model success and apply it. Do not only do more than others but do it better, be more efficient and be more effective.

3. Don't do it all by yourself. It is perhaps lonely at the top, but all winners work with and in a team. Learn how to leverage other people strengths and use that to compensate your weaknesses. You will get more results with a team then when doing everything by yourself. Synergy is an unbeatable  concept.

4. Don't give up. Winners don't quit, they learn from their mistakes, they overcome their fears and gain confidence with every step they progress.  They don't stop  when they encounter adversity and don't lose belief in themselves even if others do. Winners have perseverance and act with tenacity. Write those two word in bold letters above your bed if you want to be a winner.

7 steps to build your confidence

Dear...

Lack of self-confidence can keep you from being truly successful in anything you want to undertake. In fact some people don't undertake anything at all because of the lack of self-confidence.

If you look at the definition of (self)confidence in the dictionary, you'll find something along the lines of: trust or faith in a person or thing; freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and your abilities. In a blog I recently read on this topic it was described as: confidence is based on the belief that you, no matter your physical attributes, net-worth, career or connections, have real worth.

In other words self-confidence is the belief that you have self worth, regardless how you look, what you posses or your abilities. Belief that you have self worth even when you are stripped of everything instead of when you have everything.

Now I understand this is easier said than done and the question many people have is: how do you gain or find self-confidence when you don't have it?

These 7 steps will give you direction to build  your confidence:

1. Have a  positive attitude. Focus on the positive things in your life and learn how to see things in a more positive perspective. Make a conscious effort to see the positive in all people, don't gossip and use only positive language.
2. Focus on what you can control and accept what you can't control. E.g. you can't control the weather but you can control what to wear or the activities you are undertaking.  Accept uncertainty, uncertainty is part of life, wanting certainty in life is probably one of the main causes of shaking self confidence
3. Practice, learn, prepare. If you look for more confidence at a performance, for instance at an exam or competition, good preparation and serious practice is half of the work. Gain confidence by doing competition or exam simulations.
4. Let go of judgement. Don't judge others and don't judge yourself.
5. There are no failures. The lack of confidence comes often from the fear of failures or mistakes. There are no failures if you learn to see that every mistake is a learning.
6. Be grateful for what you have achieved so far, celebrate your wins and have an attitude of gratitude.
7. Have clear goals and understand why they are important to you. Having absolute clarity of what your goals in life are, paired with the motivation to reach them will build enormous confidence.

How are success and an open mind related...

Dear...

Successful people have an atypical behavior and an atypical way of thinking in many aspects. That's basically what sets them apart and ultimately make them successful.
One of the things most successful people have, is an open mind. Having an open mind is definitely something that you can learn.

Someone with an open mind has the ability to see possibilities in almost any situation, because of this  openminded people see more opportunities than others.

Openminded people listen without judgement, they take critic really well and can weigh what people say objectively. They listen with intend and seek for understanding first, that means they really make an effort to grasp what's been said to them and that they look less for being understood.

As a result of the previous point, open minded people know that they know it all and don't pretend that they do. This makes them vulnerable and no matter how scary that may seem it puts them in the best learning position.

Because of this drive to always want to learn, openminded people are not afraid to make mistakes in fact they have experienced that a lot of learning comes from making mistakes.

Open minded understand that there is almost never an absolute truth for anything. They make a conscious effort to see things from different perspectives, which makes them also highly empathic.

Maybe one of the strongest assets openminded people have, is perhaps their ability to embrace and drive change. They adapt to change without losing sight of their goals and objectives, they have the ability to find different ways to reach what they are after.

Bottom line having an open mind  comes down to letting go of control, the willingness to challenge your own beliefs and convictions, allowing yourself to experience what the world has to offer, to see new ideas and endless opportunities. Having an open mind, means letting go of judgement of others and yourself, this puts you in the seat of learning and is giving you the ability to use your unlimited potential.

The 7 don'ts of successful people

Dear...

Successful people make sure they do certain things, but are also adamant to ignore certain things

The 7 don'ts of successful people

1. Don't get trapped in the past...
The past makes you what you are, but only if you don't get caught in it. The past cannot be changed, make sure your past mistakes guide you and don't define you. Successful people learn from everything they have been through, the good and the bad things, they make sure they remember the past but they don't get trapped in it.

2. Don't try to control things that can't be controlled...
Thinking that you can control all aspects in your life is an illusion and trying to do so is a waste of energy.  Successful people know how to roll with the punches and how to adapt to constantly changing  circumstances.

3. Don't let fear get the best of you ...
Most fears are completely unfounded. You know the saying anything you want is just outside your comfort zone and your comfort zone ends where fear begins. Successful people realize this well and choose to be comfortable by being uncomfortable at all times. They know that if you don't risk anything you risk everything. We all have our fears. Being successful is doing things despite your fears.

4. Don't be afraid to change ...
If you want to achieve something you need to change. Change is simply inevitable, the question is in what will you change. Successful people embrace change and envision the person they need to be in order to be successful.

5. Don't sweat the small stuff...
To be successful many things need to happen and need to be done, but that doesn't mean that you have to sweat the small stuff. Successful people won't lose focus by the small stuff they simple get them done when necessary or ignore them when possible, but they keep an eye on the big picture at all times.

6. Don't let others people judgement guide you...
Asking for advice and learning from others is a great thing, but at the end of the day it's your own judgement and intuition that should drive your decisions and actions. Don't let other people's perception of you control you, if you do, other people start to define who you are and what your actions should be. Successful people consult others, but they make sure that their decisions are not influenced by the judgement of other people.

7. Don't overthink things too much...
Making plans is a good thing even necessary if you want to achieve your goals. However overthinking your plans and next actions will stop your progression and cause you to worry too much. Successful people are people who take massive actions and if they made a wrong decision or a mistake they change it up and do it again until they reach what they aimed for.

A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.

Dear...

"A good coach will make his students/athletes see what they can be, rather than what they are. "
- Ara Parasheghian

I think no one will dispute the positive effect sport plays in the development of a person.  In addition to improved physical health, active sporting has proven to lead to higher academic achievement, higher self-esteem, fewer behavioral problems, and better psychosocial. Sports contribute positively to the five 'C's: competence, confidence, connections, character, and caring. All these are considered to be critical components for personal development. The many facets of playing sport like: the discipline of training, learning teamwork, following the leadership of coaches and captains, learning to lose, can provide lifelong skills for athletes. Beside all this sport stresses the positive effects of participation in learning the important life skills of goal setting and time management combined with enjoyment; the development of a strong sense of morality; and the development of an appreciation of diversity.

Understanding the importance of sport combined with the fact that the majority of athletes see their coach as the number one influential element in the their competitive experience begs us to look closer at the role and responsibilities of a coach.

It is the coaches role to help their students to improve their skills, perform to their best ability, develop strong character, and build confidence. They can maximize the positive value of sport and competition, and they can enhance the intrinsic motivation to play sport. An athlete with the right intrinsic values of sport and the positive experience of mastery is more likely to apply fair play, good sportsmanship and is more likely to have a healthy attitude towards the sport, the fellow sporters and itself.  However when winning is overvalued it can create an environment in which unsportsmanlike behavior flourishes and it often breeds a mentality where one thinks that results justify the means.

Bad coaching can push the psychological, emotional, and physical limits of students to the point of harm, create a hostile and unfair environment, and turn athletes away from sport forever.
Even coaches who love the sport and have respect for their students can lose perspective in the quest to win. This is especially true when coaches are under incredible pressure to produce winning results.

What makes a good or effective coach?

The role of coach is a complicated one. Surveys show that coaches serve as instructor, teacher, motivator, disciplinarian, substitute parent, social worker, friend, manager and therapist. Ideally, coaches should understand the developmental stage and limits of their students in order to tailor practices and learning appropriately. In addition to these expectations, coaches are expected to have an in-depth knowledge of the sport they are coaching, including the rules and the skills and techniques needed to play the sport. At more advanced levels of competition, they need to understand basic kinesiology, sport psychology, nutrition, and basic first aid. It has to be said that at a higher level,  athletes are more likely to work with a team of 'specialized coaches' and to have access to a better 'support teams'.

10 tips to get more things done in a day...

Dear...

Successful people are getting more things done in a day than most other people...
Here are 10 tips to not only do more but also do things better and smarter.

1. Start the day with a full thank of energy
This means make sure that you'll get enough sleep, eat and drink well before the day starts.
Try to get regular sleep at regular hours. Take time for your morning ritual, shower, getting dressed, breakfast. If you start your day in a hurry, you might feel hurried the rest of the day. Get up an hour earlier and you will get more done. Start the day with an hour for yourself (exercise, meditate) and your day starts of flying.
2. Make a daily to do list
Make list of the things you want (and can) achieve during the day. They can be ambitious but need to be achievable as well. Break big tasks down in smaller ones. E.g. your overall goal might be getting fitter, but that's not a daily task, so its better to say today I'll 3K run.
3. Kiss the frog
Do the tasks you have to do but least like to do first. By doing this the rest of the day will be more productive. Turn it around and you will drag everything you have to do that day.
4. Don't multitask
It's absolutely true, most people cannot multitask. Instead of thinking that you are one of the view who can, it is better to organize your work in such way that you work from task to task. You will achieve more and with higher quality.
5. Be smart with your email
Doing email can be a black hole. Set specific times apart to do your email. Try to look at an email only once (answer, convert to task, archive or discard). Keep a zero email discipline... no emails left at the end of the day. Have good email habits: don't answer when you are on the cc list; limit the emails you send out yourself and be careful who you put on your to and cc list.
6. Shut down Social Media
Limit and set specific time aside for social media, this will increase you productivity enormously. Turn off the push notifications on your phone and close social media completely on your lap top for most part of the day. Define specific moments, when you will look at social media... no more than 3 during your work day.
7. Eat well
Never deplete your energy completely. With good nutrition you can make sure that you refill your energy reserve constantly. So eat smart and regularly.
8. Exercise a lot
Especially if you have desk work, exercise multiple times during the day. Start your day with some stretching or yoga, take walks during your breaks and have a good work-out once a day or at least multiple times per week. It's not only healthy for your body and mind but it will increase your daily productivity.
9. Capture you ideas
Capture your ideas on a list or in a notebook. Write them down when have one. Note them, but look at them at them when you have time for it. It keeps your creative juice flowing but overtime you will see that among your great ideas many of them will help you to get more done during a day.
10. Look at the big picture
If you are motivated you will get more things done. Make sure that once a day you remind yourself why you do the things you are doing. Meditate over it, pray, write ... whatever suits you best, but set at least 30 minutes a day aside to be grateful for what you have and to understand where you are heading and what your goal is in life.

Learn to accept imperfection and you can hope to reach perfection.

Dear...

People who want to be successful set high standards for themselves and always put their best foot forward. Their passion for excellence and their strive to be the best drives them to go the extra mile, they never stop and they never relent. Their dedication towards perfection undoubtedly supports them to achieve results. But there is a clear downside to perfectionism. As a matter of fact most successful people aren't perfectionists, they strive for it but they know what is good enough to produce positive results.

Perfectionists are risking to become discouraged when they fail to meet the high standards they have set for themselves. It often even leads to reluctance to take on new challenges or to finish tasks at hand. A drive for perfectionism carries also the danger of breeding inefficiency and causing major delays. It often creates stress overload and mediocre outcome, quite the opposite from the intended  perfect result.

True perfectionists have a hard time to start things and an often an even harder time to finish them.
E.g.: a competitive dancer who is too much of a perfectionist will most likely never feel ready to go on the competition floor.

The world rewards people who take actions and who get things done, it very seldom rewards perfectionists.  The only way to get things done is to accept imperfections at least most of the time.  There is nothing wrong with striving towards perfectionism but realize that only after working through years of practice and experience a level of perfection can be achieved. So take action, get experience, improve with every step, learn and repeat this over and over again.  In other words only by learning to except imperfections you can hope to reach a level perfectionism.

Burn the bridges behind you...

Dear...

In my role as coach I often say: if you really want to be focussed and move towards your goal, do two things, create a sense of urgency and cut off your way back.
If it's urgent you will be focussed and you will quit to procrastinate and waste time. If you want to save someone from drowning  you jump in the water as soon as you can, you don't go home first to change and put a swim suit on.
If there is no way back you can only move forward. Have you ever crossed a river or a pond on thin ice? If you did you know that you have to move fast, decide fast and above all you can't stop and for sure you can't go back.

Hernán Cortés the 16th century conquistador new that on his quest to conquer an empire so extensive in its territories, known now as Mexico, with only 600 poorly armed men, could only be undertaken by a man with a death wish. But, with only 3 words Cortés changed the history of the New World: “Burn the boats.”
It was a decision that easily could have backfired. Because if Cortés and his men were on the brink of defeat, there wasn’t an exit strategy in place to save their lives.  Remarkably though, the command to burn the boats had an opposite effect on his men because now, they were left with only 2 choices: die, or ensure victory.  And fight they did.

Cortés made sure that there was no way back and the only option left was to achieve his goal or die trying.

Now Cortés' way sounds pretty drastic, but I would like you to focus on the mental picture of it. We often say you shouldn't burn the bridges behind you. Well, I believe in some cases you should. I understand that it's a hard decision to know which bridge to burn and which one not; but thinking in this way will make you move forward and not go back, because there is no back.

9 tips to be(come) successful in life

Dear...

There isn’t any secret to be successful in life, but rather just common sense, positive thinking and attitude and initiative.  I would like to offer some tips to guide you down the path of success.
• Change, if you are not happy with what you have now, or who you are in life then the only one that can make a difference to your situation or life is you.
• Perseverance and determination, if you don’t give up at something you attempt then you can’t fail. If things don’t work out as planned then try again using different ways to achieve the results you are aiming for.
• What goes around comes around, you only get back in life what you are willing to put into it, if you are helpful, honest, truthful and positive then you will get the same back in return.
• Center yourself, we all need to take time out during the day to center ourselves, by re-focusing ourselves and what we wish to achieve we are able to accomplish more and be more effective in our tasks.
• Set yourself targets or goals, setting out targets or goals for yourself can help you to succeed in anything you choose, these can be daily, short term or long term targets.
• Don’t strive for perfection, never try to be perfect, no one is perfect, set a standard and goal and do the task or job to the very best of your ability and be happy with that.
• Believe in yourself, develop strategies which make you more aware of yourself and what you are capable of achieving, if you believe in yourself and what you are capable of achieving then it is likely you will be successful in everything you do.
• Focus on what you want, focus on the positive and what it is you want to achieve instead of the negative or what it is that you don’t want to achieve, always look ahead instead of back and focus only on the desired end result.
• You cannot succeed alone, all successful people rely in part on others for their success, every person has different skills, talents and abilities which when combined leads to an individual’s success.

Plan for success...

Dear...

Thinking and acting in a positive manner is part of training yourself to feel and believe you are positive in your approach to things, and that you are going to be successful.  It is self fulfilling prophecy!  However it only works if you make it work!

First of all, you do need to plan things.  First, you need to plan out your long term goals. Decide where you want to be, and then you need to decide on your strategy and have an action plan with target achievements and target dates.

This plan needs to be a visible part of your life every day.  Every morning you need to review your goals, and review how you are going to achieve them.  Everyday you need to have at least one thing to achieve, that takes you nearer your long term goal.  If you fail to keep sight of your goals, you won’t get to achieve them.

Make the absolute most of your time.  If you let your emotional fear hold you up, you will put off starting the things you need to do. And if you start, you will procrastinate and find distractions,
anything to avoid actually doing what you need to do.  This is something you have to overcome to be successful.

10 tips to manage your time better

Dear...

The secret to managing time successfully is being able to manage yourself, although we often think we don’t waste a minute of our time in reality this is far from true and there are many ways which we can manage ourselves more efficiently which ultimately leads to more successful time management. In order to successfully manage time there are strategies which you can use to stay more in control and relieve stress which plays a big factor in successful time management.

1. A lack of priorities. This is the single biggest cause of time wasting, in order to successfully manage time we have to know exactly what our priorities are for the day, by not prioritizing we spend too much time on the minor things and not enough time on the important ones.
2. Attempting to do too much. In today’s busy world, many people want things done yesterday and this only leads to rushing around and not doing a task properly, it also leads to mistakes and half-finished work with no real feeling of having accomplished anything with your time.
3. Interruptions: We all get interruptions in our day, this could be someone dropping in and asking if you have a minute to spare, which usually turn into a half hour or more. Knowing how to successfully deal with interruptions in your daily life is essential to time management.
4. Procrastination: thinking about what you have to do instead of actually getting on and doing it is one of the biggest time wasters in your day, reduce the amount of time that you spend thinking and this leaves you more time for doing.
5. Learn to say: “no”. Many of us just cannot say the word “no” when asked if we mind doing something, this is usually out of fear of upsetting the other person, but if you are taking on the responsibilities of others then you are taking time away from your own workload or tasks and essentially robbing yourself of that precious time which leads to stressing you out.
6. Clutter: Look around your desk or workspace, do you know where everything is? If you are asked for a file can you lay your hands on it or do you have to go rummaging to find it?  A cluttered desk or workspace is a time waster.
7. Set deadlines for yourself. Work out a reasonable deadline for a particular project and make sure that you stick with the deadline.
8. Manage your e-mails and phone calls. Where possible manage when you read your e-mails and take phone calls better, this was you are not continually breaking off to answer a call or reply to an e-mail. Set aside certain times when you check your e-mail and reply to them, the same applies to phone calls, it is surprising how much time can be wasted throughout a day by stopping and starting a project or task.
9. Use an activity planner. Setting your day into a planner can help you save time, a planner will allow you to allocate tasks to time slots and this way you can plan your day out and maximize your time more efficiently.
10. Avoid multi-tasking. Starting many different projects at the same time is not a very efficient way of managing time, try to complete one project before starting out on another, this gives you the satisfaction of seeing the project complete and knowing you have accomplished something with your time.

Progress yourself into mastery...

Dear...

Confident is when you fully believe in your own capabilities, when you trust that you can overcome any obstacle and that you can fight any fear.  Having confidence means that you are well set to achieve your goals, but it doesn’t stop there. You still have to do it and come into massive action. But now with confidence, with willpower you will follow through and achieve your goals, you will reach mastery and even then you don't stop.

Let's say you are learning new dance steps. You have full belief that one day you will be able to dance them. With confidence you practice and learn... And then the day comes that you are able to dance the steps that at first looked almost too complicated to perform. Your confidence is growing so you try new, even complexer steps and routines. You practice them with the same believe and confidence that one day you can dance these step as well. With each new step that you are able to dance, your belief in yourself will be reinforced and you won't stop their either. Your confidence and belief in yourself is growing and you are no longer afraid to push your boundaries further.

In this example, you have literally progressed yourself step by step into mastery, all because your confidence was high and you had full belief in yourself. Successful people will tell you that once they gained confidence they started to achieve goal after goal. It is like pushing through a wall, once the firs brick starts to fall, the rest will almost fall by itself. So if you go after your goals with high confidence and an unshakable belief in yourself you will achieve your goals and get what you want.

Give it a try whispered the heart...

Dear...

If you don't try to do the things you really want from life you might lose out on life all together. The fear of trying something comes often from the view we have about our own abilities. This view is often fed by what others told us, what they think we can and can't do. Having the right belief in yourself will give you a better view of what you are capable of and you will not hesitate from trying things.

The important thing to learn is to not take other people’s criticisms blindly. Most people don’t know you well enough and they often don't understand your motivation.  Only you can make your decisions and when you do take them without fear or apprehension.

Apprehensions can take a severe toll on our life. Especially when we want to try something new, we become apprehensive. Don't let our apprehensions rule us and stop us from trying new things or hold us from the things we want from life.

Remember: it is always better to have tried and fail than to not try at all...

Celebrate your successes

Dear...

When you are working to reach your goals, you will have success and failures. Things will go better than you expected and there will be things that didn't go so well. It is as important to understand your flounders as it is to understand your successes. It is also important that you not only realize where you have succeeded but that you appreciate your success as well. Appreciating your success will push you forward in achieving what you are after.

When you have success, no matter how small it might be, make sure to spend time and celebrate it. Do something to underline the fact that you achieved something, this doesn't have to be something big, but do celebrate your achievement.

When you are celebrating your achievements, you will remember the successes better because you took time to appreciate them. You will engrave them in your subconscious and conscious mind. Remembering your success will add to your self-belief and it creates a motivation to replicate your good
achievements. In other words you have created your own positive reenforcement, which I like to call positive self-reenforcement.

Make other people happy with your achievements by involving them in your celebrations. Involving others in will anchor memories of achievement even further.

As you should not exaggerate your failures you should also not down play your achievements or succeses. Be proud of them, share them and celebrate them with others especially the ones that supported you, but than raise the bar so your achievements will be greater with every success you have.

Is there meaning if we don't contribute?

Dear...

In life, we shouldn't only think of our own needs but also of the need of others. What we do, does affect other people, just as what other people do affect us.

It's a great thing that we are encouraged to strive for self improvement, not just financially, but also intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. It's a duty to ourselves to make the most out of the opportunities and situations presented to us. Besides striving to be successful and happy we also need to makes sure that we can give back and contribute to the people close to us.

We have to understand that nothing will ever stand on itself. Our development will have an impact on our environment, our culture and therefore the future of others.

So when we define our vision and visualize our future, we also need to look at the value of our goals and the effect they can have on others. As we plan our achievements we have to consider what we can add to other people's development, success, well being and happiness as well.

Can we control our habits?

Dear...

We have and are forming habits every moment of our lives. Most of them are or will form unconsciously. Part of these habits are habits we desire others are habits we don't desire. Some, though not so bad in themselves, are exceedingly bad in their cumulative effects, and cause us at times much loss, much pain and anguish, while their opposites would, on the contrary, bring as much peace and joy, as well as a continually increasing power.
The question her is can we determine at all times what type habits we adopt or is habit-forming a matter of mere chance? I do believe that we can control our habits.

Our mind and thoughts are the underlying power of all. Every conscious act is preceded by a thought and in principle controlled by our mind. It is our thinking that determines our actions. At least that is how it should be. If our thinking is always responsible for our actions and therefore our habits, than it is first necessary that we know how to control our thinking. I have said this repeatedly in my blogs: we are and become what we think, therefore we have to be careful what we think.

Peak energy for peak performance ...

Dear...

Becoming a successful high achiever is not only a matter of being mentally prepared, setting goals, being motivated and having a good plan. You also need to make sure that your energy always at peak level is. Low energy will make you less persistent, resilience, focussed and less strong to follow through.

There are two ways to boost your energy and to keep it at the highest level. The first one is through your nutrition and the second one through your life style habits.

Nutrition: Be as conscious as what you eat as to what you don't eat. Keep your sugar levels in balance. Stay hydrated and spread your meals out over the day, but don't eat before you go to sleep.  What you basically want to make sure is that you keep on burning fat. Prevent storing fat or starving yourself by not eating. Stay away from processed food, high carbs diets and sugar drinks such as all fruit drinks and sodas. Make sure you have a low carb diet, a lot of greens and eat only low or no trans fat proteins.

Life style habits: Stretch and exercise regularly. Have enough sleep but don't sleep too much. Make sure you have stress reducing activities, like listening to music. Have real interaction with people not only through social media. And last but not least make sure you'll get as much natural day light as you can in other words go outside, preferable into nature.

Managing your energy and maintaining it at highest level will set you up to achieve extraordinaire things or as Benjamin Franklins said it: "Energy and Persistence conquers all things".

The positives of positive thinking...

Dear...

Positive thinking is not just a state of mind. It has some real benefits for your wellbeing as well. Positive thinkers or optimists have a different 'inner dialogue' than negative thinkers or pessimists. If you tend to think more negative and be pessimistic then you have to learn how to change your 'inner dialogue'. Use different words and thoughts and learn from more optimistic people.

  • Positive thinkers are in general more productive and more healthy, they are more resilient and persistent.
  • Positive thinkers have a lower rate of depression, reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Positive thinkers have in general a better physical and mental well being and bottom line they just have an increased life span.

So If you are a negative thinker, your first positive change would be to accept the fact that negative thinking can be unlearned and positive thinking can be learned.
  • Change your attitude from seeing threats to seeing  opportunities.
  • Instead of thinking: "it will never work";  think: "let me give it a try".
  • Be someone that embraces changes instead of running away from it.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Stop yourself complaining about things that can't be changed like the weather.
  • Always think the best can happen and not the worst.

A persistent person will almost always succeed...

Dear...

To be successful in life you need to master many things. It's helpful if you are talented and it is great if you have a good education but the one thing that stands out for me is persistence. Many educated and talented people have failed in life, but a persistent person will almost always succeed.

A persistent person has the ability to be determined to achieve something regardless the setbacks he or she encounters.

Persistence is something that can be developed:
  1. Set your goal, understand what you want to achieve in life and why it is important for you.
    • Without a clear goal and clear direction very little will be reached in life.
    • Understand your motivation: why is it important for you to reach your goals?
  2. Create a plan and outline the steps you need to do.
    • Be systematic in what you want to achieve.
    • Take one step at the time
    • Know what you need to know and learn it
    • Know what you need to be able to do and master it
    • Have always a back up plan
  3. Develop good habits and discipline
    • Without good habits and discipline procrastination is likely to take over and you quickly will lose sight of your goal.
Make sure you stay in positive and good spirit. You will not succeed immediately and many roadblocks will be on your way, failures are likely to happen but the persistent person succeeds despite failures and adversities.

Excellence will always be rewarded...

Dear...

To become the best of what you can be in the future, you have to be at your best in what you do today, no matter what that is.

If you believe that all things happen for a reason and most things in life aren't random then where you  are and what you do today aren't without reasons either. You might feel you don't have the most important job in the world or you might not have the influence on others you were hoping for, but to become who you want to be tomorrow you have to accept what you are today.

Focus firstly on how to become excellent in what you do today and secondly on where you want to be in the future and change will happen fast and constantly

To become excellent do your current job without judgement, but do it with willingness to grow and learn; do it with commitment, responsibility and integrity; and most of all do your job with creativity and a sense the contribution for others.

Believe that we are all destined to do great things, not only in the future but especially in the every day things of life, do them in the best way you can and trust that excellence always will be rewarded.

Your dreams and ideas are a beacon to your purpose

Dear...

Ever wondered why dreams and ideas can occupy someone thoughts, even to the extent that it completely takes over a person's life.

Some people pursue a dream or an idea as if they are completely possessed by them. When this person is successful in its pursuit of his/hers dream we tend to all admire  him/her, but when this person is unsuccessful, we often think it was an obsessed madman.

Not wanting to belong to this last group causes many people to no pursue their dreams or ideas, but this is not the point of todays blog.

What I would like you to challenge with is the thought that perhaps these dreams and ideas are not random at all. I want you think about the concept that our ideas and dreams might conceal our purpose in life.

Can it be true that the universe is talking to us through our dreams and ideas, that it challenges and invites us to go after these dreams and ideas in order for us to become who we are destined to be?

Is this concept truly so far fetched? Think about all the people that have changed and shaped the world. Read about them and you will see that they were all pursuers of dreams and chasers of ideas.

Don't sweat the small stuff...

Dear...

Before you look at the big challenges in life, ask yourself what small challenges can you take on daily.

It's your attitude towards small daily challenges that can help you to learn how to take on bigger problems.

How do you react when little misfortunes happen in your life, flat tire, flooded toilet, burned food etcetera? How do you react if you get cut off in traffic or when someone accidentally bumps against you in the mall? How does the weather influence your mood? Ask yourself these kind of questions and answer them honestly.

Do these type of situations have a negative impact on your mood, do you typically get grumpy when these things happens and is your temper getting bad?

If this is the case, then think about if for a second: if these small things already get to you how would you take on the bigger things in life?

So don't sweat the small stuff, take them lighthearted, accept them, put them beside you if you can or just solve them. If you can do this well you are ready for some bigger challenges.

The past is the past, remember it, learn from it, but move on...

Dear...

When people say let go of the past they often refer to bad events, but in fact it doesn't matter, holding on the past blocks you from moving forward regardless wether it was good or bad.

Positive experiences can indeed hold you as much in the past as negative experiences do. There is nothing wrong with having good memoires and being proud of past achievements, but you can all imagine people who are constantly talking about their past successes without moving forward.  Those people could have build up as much fear for going after something new as the people who have had bad experiences and are afraid to try anything in general.

Successful people learn from the past, good or bad and use this to do something new. If they had success they know what went well but are also aware that doing exactly the same again might not bring in the same results again. When they had bad results  they know it doesn't always mean their method was wrong, it could be the timing or other circumstances were off.

The point is, what happened in the past is in the past, remember it, learn from it, but in all cases move on.

Be instantly happier in 5 steps

Dear...

People who are more thankful and who feel more blessed are in general more happier than other people. This doesn't mean they posses more, but they are more appreciative of what they have no matter how much or how little it is.

1. Don't take everything so serious, don't take life so serious and don't take yourself too serious. Be light hearted. Learn from children around your, learn from their lightheartedness. Make sure you have time to have fun, to celebrate and once in while be lay back and plan a vacation.

2. Learn again to enjoy the simple and basic pleasures of life. We are sometimes so busy that we are not noticing anymore the beautiful things we are surrounded with. A simple way to do that is to use your senses more conscious: Smell the flowers, See the blue skies, Listen to child laughter or silence, Feel a nice breeze, Truly taste what you eat.

3. The Power of now. We are so occupied with what lies ahead or what have been, that we have lost how to live in the moment. The number one and still growing mental symptom in modern world is worrying. Worrying means that your mind is occupied with things that are not even certain to occur.  We should better learn how to live in the moment and focus on the here and now.

4. Be more relaxed. How can you be happy if you are constantly busy, frustrated or even angry? Relaxed doesn't mean do nothing. Being relaxed is an attitude not an activity.

5. Be grateful. Feeling blessed, grateful and appreciative should probably be on top of this list. When you have a stronger sense of love and thankfulness you will have a happier and even healthier life. An attitude of gratitude can be practiced and learned. A good way to do that is to make a little list, each day before you go to bed write down three to five of things you are thankful about of the day passed.

How to reduce stress in 6 steps

Dear...

We all have faced and most likely will face stressful situations. Some people handle stress well where others are more challenged dealing with stress.

Now there are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with stress. The unhealthy ways might reduce stress on the short term but most likely cause damage on the long run.

Unhealthy ways to reduce stress are: Smoking, Procrastinating,  Worrying, Eating too much or too little, Taking drugs, Taking it out on other people etcetera. All these ways of dealing with stress are in one way or another avoiding the situation instead of dealing with it.

More healthy ways to deal with stress are:

First of all a lot of stressful situations can probably be avoided. E.g. learn how to say no and speak what is on your mind.

Secondly see a situation for what it really is: something that we think is stressful is often blown out of proportions. Seeing a situation for what it really is put things back in perspective.

Thirdly learn to accept what cannot be changed: There are things that can't be changed, learn how to accept them.

Fourthly prepare yourself well: if you prepare yourself well, by looking at the facts, by practicing and  by learning. By preparing yourself well, you reduce hugely the uncertainty of what you are facing.

Fifthly rehearse and visualize: by going through a stressful situation ahead of time in your mind and visualizing  how you will handle the situation successfully, you can reduce the stress enormously.

Lastly some level of stress and tention keeps you allert and is often necessary to do a peak performance. Understand the difference between being too stressed and have a healthy excitement for an unknown situation.

To make your dreams come true requires a good amount of courage

Dear...

Dreams of doing big things in life; we all have them or at least had them. Only a few us dare to declare what their dreams are, a smaller percentage of people pursue them and an even smaller percentage actually reach them.

It is because of the fact that most people think only a few can make it that they are not pursuing their dreams, but it is because only a few dare to pursue their dreams that only a few make it; not the other way around.

Most of us want to know what the end results are before we try to begin something. If we would be less result driven, more people would go after what they truly want from life.

So when you pursue your dreams you will not get a guarantee that you will reach them, it will be hard work, you need to do things you have never done before, you will encounter roadblocks and have many failures, other people might think you are crazy, but it will be all worth it. You will know that  you have lived to the fullest and that you have lived
with courage.

Steve Jobs says:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.  Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.  Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary.”

GIGO: Garbage in garbage out

Dear...

GIGO or Garbage In Garbage Out is a term used in computer science. When input data is of low quality (garbage in) one can only expect low quality output data (garbage out).

If this is true for computers then why would this be less true for our mind and body?

If we expect to have good thoughts and a creative mind we have to make sure that there is quality in the 'mental' things we consume. You might want to moderate watching soap operas, playing computer games and reading gossip magazines.

If we expect to have plenty energy and a healthy body we have to make sure that we eat and drink well and work out regularly. Processed food and being a couch potato might not fit that criteria.

We can set goals and want to perform at peak levels, physically and mentally. But if we don't fill/feed ourselves with good things (garbage in) you can only expect that you won't perform at your true potential (garbage out).

So if you make sure that you eat and drink healthy, exercise well and consume useful information (quality in) you can expect better performance physically and mentally (quality out): QIQO.

Set your goals so high that you are scared of them.

Dear...

When you set your goals, set them high. Don't worry whether you can achieve them or not. In fact, set them so high that you know you can't achieve them. That is to say, the current You can't.

When people set their goals, too many people reason too much from who they are today, the means they posses today and the abilities they have today. It's much better to picture yourself in the future having attained your goals already and then reason back how you got to that point.

To achieve an ambitious goal, you have to change and become the person that can and will achieve it.  Your today You, will not be able to achieve it. But you can change and you have to change to reach what you want. In fact you will change no matter what. The question is, in what will you change?

So, set your goals high, so high that you are scared of them. Then make a plan to acquire the skills and to get the means you need. Finally, push your self outside your comfort zone and pursuit the changes that are necessary.

When you do all this you will see that you turn into that person that can achieve the highest set goals.

The beautiful gift of imagination

Dear...

It is more often our own mind that limits what we can achieve than the circumstances we are in or the means we have.

Recently someone asked me: can you achieve anything by just thinking of it? I said: no, but for sure you will not achieve it if you can't think of it.

Too often I hear: you have to be realistic and set only realistic goals otherwise you only will fool yourself and get disappointed. People who say such things in most cases don't dare to dream big and often seem to have lost their ability to imagine as well.

We are all born with an ability to be free in our mind and imagine anything we want, but as we grow older a lot of us lose that beautiful gift of imagination. Some people actually think it is a complete waist of time to dream and imagine.

William Arthur Ward was right when he said: "If you can imagine it you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it."

Don't limit yourself in what you want to achieve or want to become. At least, give yourself the freedom in your mind to do that. And if you discover that you have lost the ability to be free in your mind, go back to when you were young and feel how you used your imagination when you were playing. Discover the limiting beliefs that hold you from being free in your mind. If those limiting beliefs already have a grip of your thinking they for sure have a grip on what you will achieve.

Can you have too much confidence?

Dear...

I want to share a few additions to yesterday's post about lack of confidence. Some people asked me: when does confidence turns into overconfidence and is that's bad or not.

If you are overconfident you might take too much risks and stretch yourself beyond your abilities. Overconfident people are sometimes so optimistic that they don't follow through to finish something successfully.

So it's all about balance, under-confident people don't undertake enough out fear of failing and being too risk averse; overconfident people take sometimes unnecessary risks or don't think things enough through before they do something which often lead to failure.

But in the end it is in my opinion better to learn from your failures and to take too much risk than to avoid making mistakes and taking no risk at all. After all the biggest mistake you could ever make is being afraid to make one.
